Intensive Course by University of Oxford Researchers
Dates: Dec.4-7
Course description: Over the last thirty years, health, medicine and disease have moved centre stage in the historiography of empires and more recently in global history. This course explored some dimensions of the connection between health, medicine and the political economy of empires at the time when imperial connections were also forging new world economy. Among other things, the course examined the movement of disease, the way in which social and ecological conditions are affected by global integration and methods devised to deal with these problems. It also used disease and medicine as analytical tools to explore political dynamics of colonial regime.
