Message to the graduates of the ISGS
September 24, 2021
Yasuhiro Matsui, Dean of the ISGS

I would like to congratulate all of those who have obtained master's or doctoral degrees and passed from the Graduate School of Integrated Sciences of Global Society. I would also like to convey my best wishes to all of you for your future endeavors. The master's and doctoral dissertations represent the culminations of your study and research, respectively, and condense the knowledge acquired by you in school as well as the research activities conducted by you during this time. Recalling my own experience from over 30 years ago, I remember that I became confident that I could acquire the ability to continue my research activities even after having completed my master's thesis. Of course, the skills and abilities one can acquire in a master's program are not limited to academic research abilities. Our school has embraced a diploma policy that specifies 11 core competencies, including “attitude to approach to research and issues,” “document writing skills,” and “problem-identifying and -solving skills.” We can safely say that these abilities and skills are indispensable for students’ success as professionals. We sincerely hope that all of you who have graduated from our school can make the most of the knowledge and skills acquired here and play active roles in various settings in the future.

Those having earned doctoral degrees have also received certificates to learn and develop essential skills and advance as academic researchers as well as highly specialized professionals. It has been long since the doctoral degree has been indispensable to secure superior positions at universities and research institutions. Since doctoral degree holders are quite common today, you should definitely establish your presence by publishing your dissertation in well-known academic journals or compiling it into a book if you are a humanities and social sciences researcher. The significance of your research work and its appeal in the academic world would be greater if it is published as a book. Thus, please undertake the challenge of publishing your book to carve a niche for yourself.

We are looking forward to seeing all of you who have obtained doctoral degrees utilize your academic research abilities to the fullest and play active roles in the various fields in which you would be working.

Due to the emergency situation in the wake of the novel coronavirus, we were obliged to cancel holding the degree conferral ceremony at our school. However, we are all delighted that you have completed your graduation and earned your degrees. We hope that you, as graduates, will continue to remember our school and encourage our school, faculty staff, and students from the upcoming batches. I wish you all the best for the future.
